- Input: tokens you send to the model (prompts, system, context).
- Output: tokens the model generates. Usually 3-5x more expensive than input.
- Cached input: if your prompt has a prefix you reuse (system, RAG context), the provider can charge 5-10x less for that prefix. OpenAI and Anthropic support it.
